I chose the basic economy level and that results in "Kia Rio or similar"...
This generation of Rio appears to be the best one yet. I'm not sure I'll actually get a Rio when I arrive though... because that is up to the rental car gods.

Whatever car it is, it will be the fastest car in the world.

I got a Nissan Versa CVT in that Kia Rio or similar class. :-/ Be prepared.

Knowing rental car companies, it will be all of the following.
A. Very dirty and smelly.
B. Not the car that you originally expected.
C. Be able to engage reverse at 50mph.
D. Will have a really nice handbrake, nice for driving at high speeds.

Yep, one time I was promised a Fiat 500 but when I got there... Chevy "fleet" Captiva.
Argh.
Regardless, it saw a lot of redline that day.

Enterprise let me pick whatever car was available when I traveled with friends to Cali in 2012. I was shocked... the agent walked us into their staging area and went: "Pick whatever you want".
I chose the Chevy Impala and drove it like a damn police car that it could've been. For America. Then later on, I promptly (by myself) almost died and nearly went off a canyon road because of "dat understeer".

Oh, God. Was it an old one with the worlds shittiest transmission and V6 engine?
Those things don't look that horrible on the inside, and outside. They actually don't look half bad in Police spec. But they drive like complete shit on wheels.

E. You get a "free upgrade" to a Buick Regal because that's all they have LOL inventory management.

Well, it's not like it could get worse.

Rental cars make great stage rally course cars.

I hated the seats the most, but it was fun to wind out that new-ish "high value" 3.5 V6
here she was:
with a bonus Saab in/around Topanga canyon:

Omg the teal ... that design...

Column shift, or floor shifter? Because when those had the floor shifter, the only way to tell what gear you were in was to look on the dash where the column shifter display was, since they decided against labelling the shifter because GM Cheapness.
Those things were all in all hoopties though. The service life of those things for Cops was 30,000 miles, compared to the 100,000 miles of the Crown Vic.

I still kick myself for passing up an opportunity to upgrade to a brand-new Mustang 5.0 from Budget, because 1)it was a manual and I haven't driven a proper manual in years and 2)four people and a modest amount of luggage largely precluded that option.
So I wound up with a Kia Sportage. Some 600 miles later, my back and lower neck have yet to forgive me for that transgression. Worst. Suspension. Ever.
Most recently, I got to drive a Fusion Hybrid. Pretty nice car, but too bad it was dirty as hell (chocolate stain on the headliner, intact Go-Gurt pulled out of the rear seat, etc). Still, 41 mpg over some 500-odd miles was pretty nice.

Aha, yes it was the floor shifter too! What a hoorrible bean counter idea.
I wonder how many owners out there have sharpie'd in PRNDL on the shift gate.

I have no idea what their reasoning behind that was. Probably a last second thing to make the Pimpala seem like less of a total piece.
Probably all of the owners did that, especially since it was a rental car. I wonder how many of those were totaled because the driver accidentally threw it into some other gear than drive by accident. Especially people who aren't accustomed to driving automatic transmission vehicles.

Woah, Budget had a manual 5.0 'stang? Total unicorn.
I've found a credit card and soda cans tucked away in the center console of a car once before. In fact, that whole interior kind of had a slight must/stickiness to it.

Couple months ago, the shuttle van driver floored it in neutral right in front of the service entrance while he was trying to change into reverse from drive.
[internally screaming]

Haha, that must have been very loud. What kind of van was it? I'd be interested to hear a Triton V10 get accidentally revved.

Sometimes you get the mommymobile like I did and can speed down the 401 without causing any eyebrows being raised.

Oh, I was sitting next to him inside the van.
Twas a Quest. Nice fuggin' interior on em. Oh and I was visiting the Nissan dealer for pickup/dropoff.

There is always the possibility of minivan.
Avis considers this an upgrade for those of us who rent frequently from them.
I should be getting a manual Volvo wagon at Schiphol in a few weeks.

Oh, haha. Thought you meant one of the larger courtesy thingies.
Was it that horrible console shifter that has no notches or anything? Because I hate those things.

Only if its a MAN VAN. OH YEAHHH

Ew, that's such a bad angle.

Too conspicuous. If one wants to cruise at 140km/h down the 401, you need to be as mommymobile as possible.

Jeremy Clarkson recommended as fastest van in Britain.

I go a Nissan Versa CVT as a rental once. Worst. Car. Ever. I was blown all over the road by 10mph wind gusts, the "transmission" sucks, car made of tinfoil and plastic.
I did get a Volvo V60 with 321 miles on it last time I rented when I took it to VT, so it evens out.
